What To Write When You Don’t Feel Like Writing

Ugh. I hate this.

As of today, I’m 2 weeks into my “daily” email journey.

It’s actually slightly longer than that, because I was down with covid for a week and didn’t write a single thing.

But still.

Let’s call it 2 weeks. A new email and post every single day.

And today, I really just don’t want to write anything.

I’ve been super busy at work.

I’ve been taking on way more responsibility with my copy team.

I’m testing and creating in more areas of the business than I ever have before.

AND, my main client is launching new product categories every single week … each one requiring a massive copy package complete with launch emails, search ads, and landing page copy.

I. Am. So. Tired.

Add to all of this that I’m still settling back into city life while trying to maintain some semblance of a social life with my friend.

So that all is really difficult to deal with.

I mean … it’s not anything bad. It’s just a challenge as I build out the Steal This Copy community on top of my “regular” life and work.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 9ish years of marketing and creative work, it’s this:

Creation is often better than consumption.

At least for me, it is.

Instead of scrolling through Medium or perusing r/Copywriting or whatever else I want to do, I sat down and forced myself to write.

The more difficult part was actually figuring out what to write about today.

I got there in the end, obviously.

So here’s the secret:

If you don’t know what to write, write about how you feel.

It’s what I’m doing right now.

And it’s incredibly cathartic.

Is it going to be my best piece of writing?

No.

But what’s more important to me at this stage in my journey is developing a writing practice, showing up every day, and putting finger-to-keyboard to produce something of value … instead of consuming.

So I guess that’s my second piece of advice.

When you don’t feel like creating something … create anyway.

Even if it’s terrible.
