19 Weird Things a Copywriter Keeps on His Desk

I always find people’s desks (and the things they keep on them) to be an interesting way to ethically "peer" into their psychology.

But what does that look like for a copywriter?

Today, I'm going to show you. These are the 19(ish) things I have on my desk ... and a little it about them.

From left to right:

  1. Blue 42oz Miir water bottle that I use to cool myself down when I get annoying edits from a client.

  2. My "library" (more on this in the P.S.)

  3. Green metal tool case from my late grandfather.

  4. Daily cup of coffee in an East Fork mug (they make the best ceramics, color is “Utah”).

  5. Picture of my wife and I.

  6. Metal Zippo lighter.

  7. Cool old 35mm film camera.

  8. Pilot G2 pen (the BEST mass-produced pen for journaling).

  9. A copy of Breakthrough Advertising. Been perusing it lately after working through some market awareness problems.

  10. Lacrosse ball that my chiropractor gave me to get knots out of my lower back and neck from my “hunchback” style of writing.

  11. Laptop, keyboard, trackpad. Duh.

  12. Vegan leather desk mat from Amazon.

  13. The James Brand Carter knife that I recently repaired and wrote about here.

  14. A ceramic bowl my wife made with some film and … nail clippers. Lol.

  15. Another pen. A Kaweco Sport ballpoint, also very very good.

  16. Glasses case with glasses inside that Aggie chewed on last night and completely destroyed.

  17. Fi collar charging station (it’s like a smartwatch for your dog, I’m extra, whatever).

  18. Noise canceling headphones.

  19. And then (on shelf above to the right) a sake cup, a “yoga” Joe, a stone I found last week at the beach, a black skull from Mexico City, and a vine plant I almost killed … twice.

Bonus: There are a couple of books on the shelf in the upper left corner of the photo. But I would only consider one of them to have been super impactful to my career … and it’s probably not the one you think it is.

Can you guess it? Email me back if you think you know, and I'll tell you if you're right (and why I love it so much).
