Stuff they don’t want you to know

Okay so a little about me:

  1. I like coffee. I like it hot. And I like it black.

  2. I love reading.

  3. I have a small fascination with the origin and psychology of conspiracy theories, though I am in no way a conspiracy theorist myself.

These three facts, in conjunction, help explain the glaring stink eye I got from the woman in the coffee shop below my apartment this morning.

See …

I strolled into the cafe around noon today.

I ordered a cup of coffee (piping hot, black).

I then thumbed open the book I brought with me as reading material.

The title of that book?

Stuff They Don’t Want You To Know, by Ben Bowlin, Matt Frederick, and Noel Brown.

Now, I can certainly understand why this woman gave me the stink eye when she saw what I was reading. The title alone conjures up a mental image of someone who wears tinfoil hats and builds underground bunkers …

But if that weren’t enough, then the cover art almost certainly seals the deal.

In orange and black “line art” style, it depicts a … UFO … beaming light … over what I can only imagine is supposed to be the U.S. capitol building.

(Just google “stuff they dont want you to know book” to see what I mean.)

Thing is … this book is far from a shocking exposé on chemtrails or propaganda.

It’s actually about the origin of conspiracy theories, the “shred of truth” they might contain, and the greater environment that drives their proliferation in society.

As a copywriter, I find it all fascinating.

I’m not very far into it yet, but it’s chock full of insight into the way we as humans respond to suffering … and how we assign the blame of that suffering.

Go check it out.

I'd explain it more, but I have to run — I just heard through my secret network of fellow coffee lovers that there’s a conspiracy to officially “close” this cafe for the day.

In case I don’t make it out alive, I’ll leave you with one of my best resources on getting new clients as a copywriter:

Best of luck out there … and I’ll see you on the other side.
